Effectiveness

[SOURCE: York Health Economics Consortium (2016) Effectiveness. York Health Economics Consortium. (The website can be accessed here)]

Effectiveness refers to the ability of an intervention (e.g. drug, device, treatment, test, pathway, etc) to provide the desired outcome(s) in the relevant patient population. Effectiveness is typically assessed through a clinical trial. When considered at the same time as cost-effectiveness and side effects, the effectiveness of an intervention can be measured in quality adjusted life years (QALYs)  .
